Learning ecological design principles through field work. Discussion and practical application of daily ways of being and thinking which reconnect us to human scale, low impact, locally adapted ecological communities. History of patterns of land use, food production, resource management and the U.S. economy. Designing in anticipation of nature's directions. Noticing your surroundings and identifying your connection with energy cycles and nature's patterns. Discussion of how our well being is interwoven with the well being of our ecosystems. Being outside, learning about plants, animals, microorganisms and processes around and within us. Appreciate nature's beauty and our participation in enhancing this beauty. We evolved in and are adapted to the air, water, forests and soils of earth. Discussions of diverse food production strategies. Field work will include practicing gardening techniques such as biointensive, permaculture, organic and biodynamic; also ecological restoration work.
